If you’re trying to eat healthier and more conscious, these amazing baked meatballs in sauce are perfect! So easy to make, this recipe is great comfort food for the whole family, perfect for those cold winter evenings ahead. I made this yummy recipe for my picky eater who’s been even more difficult lately. I know that she loves meatballs and tomato sauce so I thought I’d combine both but make it in a healthier version.

This meatballs and sauce recipe is double baked so it’s reduced in fat, super delicious and so easy to make! The meatballs are first prepared and baked in the oven as in this recipe.

Baked Meatballs

The sauce is basically a simple sauce made with tomato sauce, onions, garlic, salt, pepper and sugar, lightly cooked in a skillet then blended with parsley, then baked in the oven together with the meatballs.

These baked meatballs with sauce have been a big hit, we basically cleaned the plates in a matter of minutes. Yes, miss picky too! We served this baked meatballs in tomato sauce as is but it would totally be a great match for a pasta dish or with a side of polenta.

You’ll love everything about these baked meatballs with sauce! From the soft, light meatballs baked in the oven until a delicious crust is formed, to the amazing, creamy, sweet and tangy tomato sauce! These tomato meatballs will become your favorite, go to recipe with the first bite!

Baked Meatballs In Sauce

Tomato meatballs

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb lean ground pork
  • 1/2 cup homemade bread crumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 5 small garlic cloves, smashed
  • 1 egg
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of pepper
  • handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup milk (optional, if you find the mixture too thick)
  • cooking spray
  • baking pan

For the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 small onions, diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 7 fl oz tomato sauce
  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups fresh parsley, chopped

You will also need:

Directions:

  • Prepare and bake the meatballs as indicated in this recipe.
  • While the meatballs are baking, prepare the sauce.
  • Heat the oil in a skillet and saute onions and garlic until glassy.
  • Add tomato sauce, water, salt and pepper to taste
  • Add sugar, first 2 tablespoons and taste. If needed add one more tablespoon.  If not continue cooking on low about 10-12 minutes.
  • Allow to cool a little, then mix with a blender until smooth.
  • Add 1 cup parsley and blend until smooth.
  • Add meatballs to the baking dish and pour the sauce.
  • Bake in the middle of the oven at 390 F for about 15 minutes or until the sauce gets a little crust.
  • Sprinkle chopped parsley and serve.

  • blender
  • heat resistant glass baking dish
