Homemade toothpaste with coconut oil

This homemade coconut oil toothpaste recipe is simple and fun to prepare and also much safer and healthier for your teeth.

We are all aware that most commercial toothpastes contain a lot of unsafe ingredients. Of course, there’s natural toothpaste in stores, whose 100% natural composition is quite appealing. But why pay for toothpaste when you can make your own homemade toothpaste with coconut oil, for the fraction of the cost?

This coconut toothpaste is simple and fun to make, and also much safer and healthier for your teeth! Remember to use a soft brush that will allow a pleasant massage on your gums. This coconut oil and baking soda toothpaste will not foam because it doesn’t contain sodium sulfate so if you like that feature so much, this coconut oil toothpaste is not for you then.

Advantages of using this coconut oil baking soda toothpaste:

  • Very pleasant, fresh taste
  • Teeth are cleaned much better and are kept clean for a longer period
  • Successfully neutralizes garlic smell
  • In case of accidental ingestion, it can be safely swallowed as none of the ingredients are harmful to your health

How long does this coconut oil toothpaste keeps well?

This recipe keeps well in a cool, dry place, for up to 3 months.

Storing it in the fridge will make the coconut oil too hard so I don’t advise it.

Note for easy usage: If you can find a tube to put your homemade toothpaste in, that would make it much easier to spread the toothpaste on your toothbrush. Use lukewarm water when brushing and cleaning your toothbrush as the coconut oil can get a little messy in cold water.

Thanks for all your tips. I noticed that your toothpaste recipe uses ordinary coconut oil. But, as I’ve read elsewhere, using ordinary coconut oil, can give rise to plumbing problems when a washbasin is used for brushing teeth (spitting and rinsing part), because of the hardening of it, and thus, eventual clogging of the drains. So it was suggested to rather use fractionated coconut oil, so as to not impair the plumbing.

  2. How long would this last before going bad? :-)

    1. I’ve used it all, twice a day, and hasn’t gone bad.

  3. I did as instructed but most of it stayed liquid with some settling in the bottom. Should I keep mixing it occasionally and put in the fridge until it sets. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks for the simple recipe, can’t wait to figure out what went wrong so I can use it.

    1. Hi. Thanks for your interest in my recipe. I’m sorry, I just assumed people would know with coconut oil stirring from time to time is the norm. Stir every 2-3 minutes while keeping the recipient in a cold-ish environment. The fridge would make it hard too quickly so in a chillier room would be better.

      1. I did shake it when I saw it was settling to blend it back together. Also I guess it needed alot longer than I expected to set because this morning it was hardened. It smells sooooo good. I tried the whole oil pulling thing people were doing and it gagged me so I’m glad I can get some benefits from the coconut oil in a more pleasant way :)

      2. I’m glad you sort it out and you enjoy your toothpaste, Patti. I guess coconut oil is different by brand, I never considered that either, silly me lol
