How to make a fringed fleece scarf

This fleece scarf is so easy and fun, I intend to make one of these babies for myself too. I made this lovely pink DIY fleece scarf for my daughter, to wear it when we travel via airplanes as some companies tend to go overboard with the air conditioning! It gets really chili and my poor little angel is so sensitive, she almost lost her voice the last time we took a flight.

Fleece scarves would make great gift ideas for friends and family, are inexpensive, and are easy and pretty quick to make, even for a klutz like me! Fleece is pretty cheap and you can get a scarf for as little as 1-2$ if we take into account that one yard of fleece can make several scarves. So why buy when you can make it for way less?

This little stylish fleece scarf is so soft and cuddly and gets her warm so quickly, Ellie loves every bit of it! I didn’t expect the pink to match the brown yarn at all but since these were my only options I had to go with that. But after making this fleece scarf DIY I think the colors do complement each other pretty nicely, don’t you think?

A great advantage of this fleece scarf is that it’s very easy and inexpensive to make, as well as saving a lot of time because it doesn’t need hemming. We could also call it a lazy scarf, as you basically cut a long strip of fleece which you can already use as it is.

This fleece scarf is so easy to make, you can engage kids in making it. As the basic version doesn’t involve sewing, there is no risk of stinging, though you must supervise younger children while using the scissors. Always make sure they use scissors with blunt tips to avoid any injury.

Fleece scarf gift ideas

With so many designs, you can make personalized gifts for everyone, as you can definitely find something to match everyone’s interests and personality. Boys will love sports or superhero-themed scarves, while girls will be really happy with flowers, pink shades or pretty animal designs.

You can even think of making matching scarves for winter events or for groups like clubs, teams or best friends. In Christmas, make a batch as a connecting gift with your extended family and wear them together for a nice family photo. This will make a great memory for everyone.

To get a matching set, make mittens and a cap from the same fabric, so you have full protection during winter.

Fleece is also great to make infinity scarves the same way you would make one out of any other fabric. A wider infinity scarf can also double as a hood if you get caught in a cold, windy day without a hat or a hooded coat.

To make a unique piece, make a longer scarf and turn the ends to make a pocket at each end. A funny, muppet-like pocket is going to be lots of fun, especially for the kids.

How to make a fleece scarf?

Making scarves from fleece is probably the easiest way to create new accessories for colder days! Because it doesn’t fray, fleece is the easiest fabric to work with and since it’s so soft and cuddly, a fleece scarf is the perfect accessory on cold seasons!

If you have a scarf that you love and want to replicate it, just measure that scarf then cut a strip of same measurements from fleece. From here on it’s just a matter of decorating your new scarf with pom poms, a fringe, embroideries etc.

If you want to start from scratch and don’t have a scarf to replicate, just think about how long and wide you like your scarves to be, then cut a strip of fleece accordingly. As a tip: a strip that is too wide can be narrowed down, but if it’s too narrow, you can only sew two strips along their length to widen the scarf. This is where you have the opportunity to bind together two different colors or designs to make the scarf more catchy.

On the other hand, you can even use a wide scarf as a poncho to cover yourself up when feeling cold. As there are so many fleece designs these days, it’s very easy to choose your favorite to match your winter outfits or just choose a nice color you love.

How to add fringe to a scarf

Adding a fringe to a scarf makes this accessory so much more interesting, fun and stylish. You can opt for different materials like yarn (as I did here), pom pom strips or embroidery floss (you can even use this floss to make tassels and add them as a fringe to your scarf)

If you don’t feel like adding thread or any other trimming, just cut some fringe out of the scarf itself. In this case, add the fringe length to the final measurement. There is no standard length for the fringe and you can cut it as long or short as you like.

If feeling crafty, you can take a simple fleece scarf to the next level by adding beads, fleece designs cut from different-colored pieces, lace, embroidery, painted designs or other decorations you love.

The fringe you cut from the scarf itself can be left as it is, or twisted for a more interesting design.

Braided fleece scarves are also very interesting and unique-looking, so it may be a good idea to try our hand at doing this. There is also no sewing included, just cutting strips and braiding. You can use different colored strips from past projects or just use the same color for a simpler look.

Options are unlimited, so I can’t wait to read about your scarf designs and the trimmings or decorations you chose for them. Please let me know in the comments section below.

How to make easy fleece scarves:

Cut the fleece

  • Lay your fleece on the cutting mat and using the ruler, measure the length and width of your scarf. Cut the fleece with the rotary cutter, using the ruler and the marks as a guide.
  • Fold the ends about 1/2″ and make tiny snips on the fold, about 1/4″ apart. Be very careful not to cut too big of slits!
  • Cut the yarn the desired length (depending on how long you want your fringe to be).

Adding fringe to scarf

  • Take 2 threads ad fold them in half, then pull through the little snips you made on the scarf. A crochet hook might be helpful here.
  • Take the end of the yarn and pull through the little loop you just created with the yarn. Gently pull until the yarn forms a tight knot, so you won’t tear the fleece at the snips.
  • Once all yarn is added, trim it to the desired length and to be of the same size – optional.
  • That’s it! Your cute, warm fleece scarf is ready to wear!
