How to make string Easter eggs

Materials

To make your own string Easter eggs, you will need the following materials:

  • Embroidery Floss: Available in a wide range of colors, embroidery floss is the main component that will wrap around the balloons, giving the eggs their vibrant look.
  • Water Balloons: The foundation of your string eggs. Inflated water balloons provide the perfect egg shape for this project.
  • Wood Glue: When mixed with water, wood glue will secure the embroidery floss in place, hardening to form the egg shape.
  • Water: Mixing water with wood glue helps in adjusting the consistency for easier application.

Substitutes

In case you’re missing some materials, here are some quick substitutes:

  • String, twine or yarn: If you don’t have embroidery floss, using any thin string, twine (for a rustic look) or yarn can work similarly.
  • Regular Balloons: For larger eggs, regular-sized balloons can be used instead of water balloons.
  • PVA Glue: If wood glue isn’t available, PVA glue or clear craft glue can serve as alternatives.

Equipment

To ease the process, having the following equipment will help:

  • Old Container: For mixing wood glue and water.
  • Old Clothespins: Useful for hanging the string eggs to dry.
  • Pin or Needle: To pop the balloons once the glue has dried.
  • Scissors: To cut the embroidery floss and other decorations.
  • Optional: Ribbon, hot glue gun, and bows for further decoration.

Instructions to make the string eggs

Preparations

  1. Inflate the water balloons to the desired size of your string eggs.
  2. Mix equal parts of wood glue and water in an old container. Stir until you achieve a smooth consistency.

Making the eggs

  1. Soak your string/floss/yarn into the mixture, leaving one end out so you can easily pull the string out once done soaking.
  2. Blow your balloon up.
  3. Gently remove excess glue out of your string, while pulling the string out the container. You want some glue to remain in the string for it to properly stick onto the balloon.
  4. Wrap the string around your balloon, starting at the knotted top. Twist string around the knot for the first few rounds then wrap the string all kinds of directions until the whole balloon is covered in string.
  5. Attach a clothespin to the knotted top of the balloon and hang to dry. Leave to fully dry for at least 24 hours.
  6. Once dry, grab the eggs and a pin and pop the balloon.
  7. Gently pull the popped balloon out using scissors or tweezers (especially if small pieces are left inside the egg).
  8. Glue ribbon and bows on – optional.

Tips for making perfect eggs

  • Use different colors of embroidery floss to create a colorful and vibrant display. You can mix and match in the same egg or different eggs.
  • The more glue you leave on the string, the sturdier your egg will be.
  • For added texture, mix in other materials such as glitter or confetti with the glue mixture before soaking your string.
  • Hang the eggs to dry in a well-ventilated area to speed up the drying process.
  • Applying a light coat of spray varnish to the finished eggs will give them a glossy look and added durability.

Craft variations

There are endless variations to create unique string Easter eggs, such as:

  • Using different types of embroidery floss, such as metallic or glow-in-the-dark.
  • Incorporating beads, sequins, or buttons for added texture and design.
  • Wrapping the eggs with multiple layers of floss to create a more solid look.
  • Experimenting with different balloon shapes, such as ovals or hearts.

What to do with the string Easter eggs

These adorable eggs aren’t just for decoration; there are many ways to enjoy them:

  1. Use them as traditional Easter eggs and hide them for an egg hunt.
  2. Hang them on a tree branch or display them in a basket for a festive centerpiece.
  3. Turn them into unique place settings by adding name tags or small treats inside.
  4. Create a garland by stringing them together or hang them on a wreath.
  5. Give them as gifts to friends and family to add some handmade charm to their Easter décor.
  6. For an Easter brunch centerpiece, fill a clear vase with these colorful string eggs and intertwine LED fairy lights.

Storing the Easter eggs when not in use

To keep your string Easter eggs in good condition for years to come, store them in a cool and dry place. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of them as they can lose their shape.

Wrap them loosely in tissue paper and add them to a box filled with something soft, such as shredded paper or fabric, to keep them from breaking. With proper care, these string Easter eggs can become a cherished part of your annual Easter traditions.
