How Long Does It Take to Cook Chicken in the Instant Pot?

While cooking a whole chicken in the Instant Pot doesn’t take nearly as long as it would to cook the chicken in the oven, you’ll need at least an hour to cook an entire bird. But if you’re wondering what time to punch into your pressure cooker display, the exact cook time depends on how big your chicken is.

A good rule of thumb is to cook your chicken in the Instant Pot for six minutes per pound. So, for a 5 ½ pound chicken, you should set the Instant Pot to cook for 33 minutes.

After the cook time is up, the cooking process isn’t finished though. Once your timer goes off on the Instant Pot, you’ll also need to do a natural release to remove the pressure from the pot. During the natural release time, which typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, your chicken will continue cooking in the pot.

That means it’s essential that you allow the pot to release pressure naturally instead of doing a quick release after the cook time is up. If you rush the pressure release, your chicken may come out undercooked.

How Do You Prepare a Whole Chicken for Roasting?

Although you might need to put in a few more minutes of prep work to get your whole chicken ready for cooking, preparing an entire chicken at once gives the meat so much more flavor than cooking the chicken in pieces. And luckily, getting your whole chicken ready for roasting only takes a few minutes of work!

  • Remove the giblets. Before you can start cooking your whole chicken, there are a few pieces of the bird that need to be removed. Start by taking the neck off the chicken, then remove the giblets from the inside of the bird.
  • Pat the chicken dry. After the chicken has been cleaned, use a paper towel to pat the chicken dry all around the outside of the bird. Taking the time to dry the skin will ensure your seasoning sticks as the chicken cooks in the Instant Pot.
  • Season the top of the chicken. Start by combining all your seasoning ingredients in a small bowl so the herbs are well mixed. Then, sprinkle the spices over the top of the chicken. Use your hand to lightly press the seasoning into the skin.

Tips for Cooking a Whole Chicken in the Instant Pot

Once you have your chicken prepared, all that’s left to do is start cooking! With the help of these Instant Pot cooking tips, you’ll be able to prepare a delicious chicken dinner in no time at all.

Pick the right size chicken

The size of your chicken will depend on how big your Instant Pot is. It’s a good idea to use a chicken that fits inside the pot with the bottom of the chicken resting on the trivet. To keep the chicken from burning or sticking to the sides of the pot, there should be at least a small amount of space between the chicken and the side of the pot.

Always add liquid

You don’t need a lot of liquid to get juicy chicken using your Instant Pot. But it’s essential that you add at least one cup of water or broth to the pot. The liquid will help keep your chicken from burning as it cooks and create steam in the pot to help keep the chicken from drying out.

Use a trivet

To keep the chicken from sticking to the bottom of the pot as it cooks, make sure to place your trivet in the Instant Pot before adding the chicken. First, pour the liquid in the bottom of the pot. Then, place the trivet on top of the liquid. After that, place the chicken on top of the trivet.

Finish the roasted chicken in the oven

While using your Instant Pot is a great way to speed up the cook time of your chicken and give you juicy, tender pieces, you won’t get the crispy skin you normally see on a chicken roasted in the oven. To get that delicious crust on the outside of your whole chicken, simply transfer the cooked chicken to a baking sheet and top it with butter. Then, place the chicken under the broiler in your oven and broil for a few minutes until it begins to brown.
