Now that you have all the materials and equipment ready, it’s time to start crafting! Follow these steps to create your own wooden spoon uncle Sam:

Preparations

  1. Gather all your materials and equipment and lay then out in a clean and spacious area.
  2. Protect your workspace with paper or a plastic tablecloth to avoid any mess from the paint and glue.

Making the Uncle Sam

For the hat
  1. Place the regular craft stick two inches down from the top of the wooden spoon spatula, and draw a line with a pencil. Print the patterns out. Using the pattern sheet as your guide, paint the top third of the wooden spoon with white acrylic craft paint with a scallop edge. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
  2. Basecoat from the pencil line up with white acrylic craft paint. Using a small flat paintbrush, add vertical stripes with red acrylic craft paint. Basecoat the regular craft stick with blue acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
  3. Attach the blue craft stick to the painted edge of the wooden spoon spatula with a glue gun and glue sticks. This becomes the hat brim. Trim ½” from each end of the craft stick with scissors.
  4. Paint the handle of the wooden spoon spatula with blue acrylic craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.
For the face and body
  1. Attach two wiggle eyes to Uncle Sam’s face with a glue gun and glue sticks. Create cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser in pink acrylic craft paint and dotting on the right and left side under the wiggle eyes.
  2. Print the patterns, then cut out with scissors. Trace the beard and mustache onto white craft foam with a pencil, and then cut out with scissors. Attach the beard, and then the mustache with a glue gun and glue sticks. Trim the rounded end from a regular craft stick with scissors and glue just under the wiggle eyes as Uncle Sam’s nose.Attach three red buttons to the handle of the wooden spoon spatula with a glue gun and glue sticks.
  3. Trace the star pattern onto the back of the silver glitter cardstock with a pencil, and then cut out with scissors. Attach to the hat with a glue gun and glue sticks. To finish, embellish the star with a self-adhesive clear rhinestone.

Tips

  • You can us liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry. A glue gun works much faster and is more secure.
  • You can add some extra details to your craft, such as a bowtie or a flag in uncle Sam’s hand.
