Whether you want an activity that the whole family can enjoy or one that will keep the kids entertained while adults chat away, this project has got everyone covered.

What are noise makers?

Noise makers are small objects that create loud sounds when shaken, clanked together, or popped. They usually take the form of a tube that has been tightly rolled up and placed in a sealed end with some sort of filling. When you move them around or use them for their intended purpose (shaking, clanking) they make a very loud noise because of the air being trapped inside.

What are those party noisemakers called?

The kind of noisemakers that are often given out at kids’ birthday parties and New Year’s Eve celebrations are called party poppers . But if you want to get really specific, the term noise maker can refer more generally to any small object that creates a loud sound when shaken or used in some other way.

How many types of noise makers are there?

There are two types of noise makers. The first type is homemade, which usually entails rolling up a piece of paper into a small tube and filling it with something that makes loud sounds when pressed together- for example, rice or beads. The second type are store bought noise makers, which are also tubes filled with different materials depending on the desired sound, but they are pre-made and ready to use.

The most common noise makers are  noisemakers used at sporting events, like vuvuzelas and thundersticks, but they can also take the form of tiny drums, maracas or even horns!

What are some common objects that can be turned into homemade noise makers?

Common objects that can be turned into noise makers are paper towel rolls, aluminum cans, or any other similar cylindrical shaped object that is tightly sealed at one end. You can create your own custom noise maker by filling the tube with whatever you like.

What do you put inside a noise maker?

There are many different things you can put inside a noise maker depending on what kind of sound you want it to make. For example, if you want your noisemaker to make a loud crashing sound, you can fill it with small rocks or pebbles. If you want something that rattles, like a maraca, fill it with small beads, marbles or shells. You can also use dried pasta, rice or popcorn kernels to create a popping noise. Coins are another good option. And for a festive New Year’s Eve noise maker, fill it with beans to make a loud rattling sound!

Whatever you decide to put inside your noisemaker, just be sure that the pieces are large enough so they don’t create a choking hazard for young children. Also, avoid using anything sharp or dangerous that could cause injuries.

Get started on these festive homemade noise makers today! You won’t regret it – I promise that once everyone sees how cool they look at the party, they’ll be asking where you got them all night long. It doesn’t get much easier than this – just grab some supplies and let’s get started!

What You Need to Make New Years noise makers

This craft is so simple to make because you only need a handful of supplies to put it together. You probably have everything you need to make your own noise makers at home, which means you can put this easy craft together without much prep work!

To make your own DIY noise makers, you’ll need:

  • Empty toilet paper rolls: You’ll need one empty roll for each noise maker you plan to make. In addition to toilet paper rolls, you can also use paper towel rolls. You’ll just need to trim the paper towel rolls to size before putting the craft together.
  • Printable wrapper: To decorate your New Year’s Eve noisemakers, you’ll also need to download my free printable wrapper. Just print it out on copy paper to get this part of the craft ready for your kids.
  • Filler: To fill my noisemakers, I used dried black beans as the filler. There are a variety of other fillers you can use in your noise maker, depending on what you have on hand. Rice, small pasta noodles, or bells would all make great additions to your noisemakers.
  • Decorations: There are so many fun ways to decorate your noisemakers! We added a popsicle stick to the bottom as a handle, along with some ribbon streamers to make them festive. You could also add stickers, glitter paint, or sequins to your noisemakers to add some sparkle.

How to make a noise maker?

Making DIY noise makers out of empty toilet paper rolls is so simple! In fact, you can create your own cardboard tube noise maker for your New Year’s Eve celebration in just three steps:

Seal the end of the tube

The most important step to turning your toilet paper roll into a noisemaker is to seal one end of the tube. I used a stapler to seal the end of the roll because the staples are a little sturdier than glue. While glue may hold the sides of the tube together for a short period of time, it doesn’t hold up to continued shaking. That means that the filler inside your noisemaker may fall out and make a mess if you try to secure the ends of your shaker with glue alone.

Fill the noisemaker

After you have one end sealed, you can add your filler. Beans are a great, cost-effective filler for your noisemaker. You could also add different fillers, like rice or pasta, or mix and match the fillers for a unique sound. The important thing to remember about filling your noisemaker is that you shouldn’t overfill the cardboard tube. Adding too much filler inside your tube will cause the filler elements to bunch together and no sound will come out at all! Instead, it’s best to fill your tube only halfway full of filler pieces to ensure the pieces have plenty of room to shake inside the tube.

Decorate the shaker

Once your shaker is filled with something noisy, seal the top of the tube. After that, all that’s left to do is decorate! You can add all kinds of decorations around your toilet paper roll to create a festive shaker for any celebration. To decorate your noisemaker, try adding color and sparkle with different craft supplies, like:

  • Ribbon
  • Streamers
  • Washi tape
  • Glitter glue
  • Stickers
  • Sequins
  • Markers or paint
  • Construction paper or scrapbook paper

How to Use a Noisemaker

Now that you have your toilet paper roll filled and decorated, it’s time to have some fun! To use your noisemaker, simply hold it in your hand and shake. You can hold the toilet paper roll itself or add a popsicle stick handle to the bottom to make it a little easier for your kids to use. After that, just shake the noisemaker back and forth to knock the beans inside together, making a loud noise. Your kids can shake fast and slow or hard and soft to see the different types of sounds their noisemakers can make.

And since this noisemaker craft has a New Year’s Eve theme, it makes a great party activity. To encourage your party guest to make their own noisemakers, create a crafting station at your celebration. Set out enough toilet paper rolls and decorative wrappers for each of your guests, then let them put their own noisemakers together.

After the kids have had a chance to construct the craft, they can use their DIY noisemakers to celebrate the new year!
