How to make an upcycled vase from pasta sauce jar

Materials you need

  • Old Pasta Sauce Jar: The base of our upcycled vase.
  • Chalk Paint in Black and White: These paints provide a matte and chic finish to the jar.

Substitutes

If you don’t have a pasta sauce jar, any sturdy glass jar can work just as well. Similarly, acrylic paint can be used as a substitute for chalk paint, though the finish will be less matte.

Equipment

  • Painters Tape: For creating clean lines and geometric patterns.
  • Paint Brushes: Essential for applying the paint evenly.
  • Scissors: To cut the tape and jute twine.
  • Jute Twine: Adds a rustic touch to the finished vase.

Instructions to make the upcycled vase

Preparations

Start by thoroughly cleaning your old pasta jar. Remove any labels and residue to ensure the paint adheres smoothly.

Crafting

  1. Start by painting the entire jar with 3 coats of the white chalk paint
  2. Once completely dry add strips of the painters tape. So lay 3 pieces down next to each other and then remove the middle one to create a striped look. Using the gray paint, paint the spaces in between the tape
  3. Then repeat the same process with the tape but horizontally and paint the in between lines using the gray paint. I did a few coats of the gray paint
  4. Using the black paint on alternating squares paint black to give the buffalo check look
  5. Wrap the top of the jar completely with twine and then tie in a bow.

Tips

  • To avoid visible brush strokes, use a sponge brush for a smoother finish.
  • If you’re using acrylic paint, adding a bit of baking soda to the mix will give it a similar texture to chalk paint.
  • Ensure the jar is completely dry before starting, as any moisture can cause the paint to bubble and peel.

Craft Variations

  • Boho Chic: Use brighter colours and patterns for a bohemian vibe.
  • Minimalist: Stick to monochrome shades and simple lines for a sleek, modern look.
  • Rustic: Incorporate more natural elements like stones, leaves, or even burlap alongside the twine.

Your upcycled vase can be used in numerous ways:

  • Flower Vase: Perfect for holding fresh or dried flowers.
  • Utensil Holder: Keep your kitchen tools organized and stylish.
