How to make a mummy jar

Materials you need:

  • jars – You can use any size or shape of jar for this project, but mason jars or small jelly jars work best. Make sure the jars are clean and dry before starting.
  • toilet paper – This will be used to wrap around the jar and create the look of a mummy.
  • googly eyes – These will be used to give the mummy jar a cute and spooky face.
  • glue – You can use any type of glue, such as hot glue or white school glue, to attach the googly eyes to the jar.
  • scissors – These will be used to cut the toilet paper as needed.
  • optional: black construction paper or marker – This is optional, for creating a mouth on the mummy’s face.
  • Halloween candy

Instructions to make the Halloween jars:

  • Take a long strip of toilet paper and fold it in half twice.
  • Apply some glue on one end and glue it on to the jar, at the top.
  • Start wrapping the toilet paper all around your jar, applying a dollop of glue here and there, to help the toilet paper stay in place.
  • When the jar is completely wrapped in toilet paper like a mummy, apply another dollop of glue at the end of the strip.
  • Take 2 (or more if your mummy went crazy lol) googly eyes and glue on.
  • Allow the glue to dry then fill the jars with candy.

Enjoy your new DIY Halloween treat jar!

Tips

  • If you want your mummy jar to look more aged, you can lightly rub some brown or black paint onto the toilet paper after it is wrapped around the jar.
  • For added durability, consider using fabric instead of toilet paper. Strips of white or off-white fabric can create a more lasting mummy look and are less likely to tear.
  • You can also use glow-in-the-dark googly eyes to make your mummy jars even spookier when the lights go off. Or add some light-up features inside the jar for a fun and eerie effect.
  • Consider making different sizes and shapes of mummy jars to create a whole family of mummies. Smaller jars can be great for individual treats, while larger jars can serve as a centerpiece.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use different materials for the wrapping, such as gauze or cheesecloth?

Yes, you can definitely get creative with different types of fabric to wrap around the jar. Just make sure it is thin enough to allow light from a candle or battery-operated tea light inside the jar to shine through.

How long does it take for the glue to dry?

This depends on the type of glue used and can range from a few minutes to several hours. If you’re using hot glue, it should dry fairly quickly.

What other decorations can I add to my mummy jar?

You can use markers or construction paper to create a mouth on your mummy’s face. Or add some yarn or twine to create the appearance of bandages. Get creative and have fun with it!

Can I use these jars for other occasions besides Halloween?

Absolutely! These mummy jars can be a fun addition to any spooky-themed party, as well as a unique gift for a hostess or friend. Just change up the colors and decorations to fit the occasion.
