Pumpkin Craft Tips and Tricks

This craft is so easy to put together. And that makes it perfect for kids of any age. Depending on the ages of your children, you may need to do a little bit of prep work to help your little ones complete this project. If you’re planning on making this fall project with young children, consider taking these steps to help make this craft a little easier to put together.

  • Cut the sticks in half for your kids. Cutting popsicle sticks in half with child’s safety scissors is pretty impossible. If your child isn’t old enough to use regular scissors, it’s a good idea to take a minute to cut the popsicle sticks in half for them. You’ll need six pieces to create this craft, so cut three popsicle sticks in half for each pumpkin you plan on making.
  • Trace the pumpkin and cut out the shape on the paper. Another step you could take for younger kids is to cut out the pumpkin shape on the paper for them. If your child is still working on their tracing and cutting skills, taking the time to do this step for them could make the crafting process a little simpler. Once your child puts their popsicle stick pumpkin together, use a pencil to trace around the outside of the shape. Then, cut around the shape to create a paper backing for your popsicle stick pumpkin.
  • Cut the leaf. To create leaf small enough for the top of the pumpkin, it’s a good idea to trim the faux leaf to fit your craft. Cutting the leaf into smaller pieces before your kids start crafting will save them some time and effort.
  • Let the kids have fun with paint. While there are a few steps in this craft that may be too difficult for young kids, painting isn’t one of them! Let your little ones have some fun with paint as they prepare their pumpkin crafts. After you have the popsicle sticks cut and ready to go, let your child paint the pieces for the pumpkin orange. Then, give them another popsicle stick to paint green to use as the pumpkin’s stem. Make sure to let the paint on your popsicle sticks dry completely before putting the pumpkin craft together.

Fall Pumpkin Craft Ideas

Once you have the basic pumpkin shape made with your popsicle sticks, you can have a little bit of fun with this craft! There are a variety of ways you can use this pumpkin craft to create some fun new projects with your kids.

  • Use different sizes of popsicle sticks. Make large and small pumpkins by varying the size of your sticks. You can use full-sized sticks for larger pumpkins or cut the popsicle sticks into smaller pieces for mini pumpkins.
  • Make some Jack-o-lanterns. Turn plain pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns by drawing faces on the paper with a marker. Use plain orange construction paper and a black maker to draw spooky faces on the pumpkins to turn this into a cute Halloween craft.
  • Turn it into a magnet. Get more use out of your kid’s fall craft by turning the pumpkin into a magnet. After your kids are finished decorating their pumpkin craft, add a magnet to the back of the paper. Then, you can display their project on the refrigerator!

What do you need to make this Pumpkin Craft?

One of my favorite parts about this pumpkin craft for kids is that you only need a few simple craft supplies to put it together. To make your own popsicle stick pumpkin at home, you’ll need:

  • Popsicle sticks. To create the pumpkin frame, you’ll need orange and green popsicle sticks. You can purchase pre-colored sticks from the dollar store or use orange and green paint to decorate plain popsicle sticks.
  • Orange paper. Add a unique look to your pumpkins with the help of orange patterned scrapbook paper. You can use polka dot or striped paper to give your pumpkin a pattern. Or simply use plain orange construction paper to decorate your fall craft.
  • Green leaf. Grab a package of faux fall leaves from the dollar store to decorate your pumpkin. Most packages contain green leaves that are perfect for topping off your popsicle stick craft. You can also make your own green leaves for the top of your pumpkin with the help of green construction paper.

In addition to these three craft supplies, you’ll also need scissors, glue, and a pen or pencil to put this kid’s art project together.
